Introducing the brilliant crew who make Northern Light Charters the company it is.

Lindsay playing the fiddle on the aft deck of Hjalmar Bjorge by Sheila Saltmarsh
Ylva and Lindsay aboard HBj in Oban Lindsay fiddling on Hjalmar Bjørge

We are delighted to report that cook Ylva Powlett and crew Lindsay Wilson will be joining Mark aboard Hjalmar Bjørge again in 2008. They both worked on Hjalmar Bjørge for the first time in 2007 and loved it so much (must be the early starts and Force 7s) they're back!

Lindsay has a Marine Biology degree and is a traditional fiddle player - perfect qualifications for crew! She is wee of stature (a miniature Mulleach) and ever cheerful. Lindsay is often seen leaping, with a warbled cry, across to various quays, ready to take Hjalmar Bjørge's lines. Lindsay has found love since joining Northern Light Charters...as her eyes met those of a young Welsh diver across the foredeck of Hjalmar Bjørge early in 2007. He has since talked Lindsay into learning to dive - must be the rubber and neoprene!

Ylva is trained as a chef and has years of boat crewing experience. She is also a qualified Occupational Therapist - a perfect combination of characteristics for a boat chef! She is less wee of stature than Lindsay but just as cheery and is often heard yodelling in the galley while she prepares feasts of extravaganza. Ylva's food is fit for a king (the King of Spain for whom she once prepared dinner) and she has received several marriage proposals from well-fed divers aboard the boat. Just don't ask her to tell you any jokes or you may regret it...

Tim under sail Heather aboard HBj in Iceland

For the 2008 season Zuza will be run by skipper Tim Wear and mate/cook Heather McNeill. Heather is a fun loving outdoor person who has been passionate about sailing since her late teens. She has lived on Skye for 26 years both working as a chef in some rather nice hotels and, as a qualified skipper, dinghy instructing, racing and cruising. Heather cooked on Hjalmar Bjørge for three seasons (including the trip to the Faroes and Iceland) and is looking forward to being on a "real" boat with "sticks and hankies". Her Scottish sailing seasons are usually interspersed with French skiing seasons and our "au revoir" always includes the plea, "Try not to break anything before next April…"

Tim started sailing at the tender age of seven and has over 30 years experience of sailing on the West coast of Scotland alone. Based on the Isle of Skye he has worked as a fisherman, yacht skipper and ran his own charter boat for seven years. Since 2004 he has been working in the Mediterranean but is returning to the West Coast because the sailing and anchorages are better. Well, that's his view and he's sticking to it! Tim has qualifications coming out of his ears and is a friendly guy who always appears calm and relaxed - ideal when the vagaries of Scotland's ever-changing weather is dictating what you can and cannot do!!!

Donna in Zuza's wheelhouse John aboard Hans Hansson in Iceland

This year we have Donna MacMillan as shore support helping us with house-keeping and other boat related tasks at Corpach. Donna's hospitality experience has previously been restricted to buildings fixed securely to the land and she looked somewhat bemused when asked to swab the decks for the first time! Having successfully completed several undesirable cleaning jobs aboard Zuza she now qualifies for the job title "Bilge Rat". Jack-of-all-trades Donna is also an administrator for her uncle's building firm and, as an assistant Registrar, she can marry you (as long as it doesn't distract her from making beds or cleaning toilets).

Last but certainly not least we must mention Big John who is the only skipper that Mark has ever entrusted Hjalmar Bjørge with. Unfortunately for us John went over to the "dark side" last October and is now employed as an engineer by Cal Mac. However we remain positive that we might be able to persuade him to take the wheel from time to time as his new job affords him two weeks on, two weeks off plus holidays! Gentle giant John lives on the Isle of Mull and sings in the Gaelic choir. Ply him with enough whisky and you might get to hear him yourself.
