Formerly named Northern Light Charters, The Northern Light Cruising Co Ltd was first formed in 1995. The company has pioneered Wildlife and Island Cruises on Scotlands west coast and beyond. Our expeditions and cruises have covered the entire west coast of Scotland, from Islay, St Kilda, North Rona, Orkney, Shetland, to Norway, Faroe and Iceland. Our first vessel was the MV Chalice, we then ran MV Poplar Diver, which principally took the Scottish National Trust work parties to and from St Kilda (not missing a trip). With our purchase of Hjalmar Bjorge in 2001, we then became the only cruise operator running a vessel of it’s class and capability
Mark Henrys (right) is the sole director, he has been involved with boats for over 40 years and is RYA qualified. At school he was an active sailor before an early career in the military. Here, he maintained his nautical pursuits, racing a variety of dinghy’s and yachts. In 1977 he participated on Operation Drake and sailed the Atlantic on the tall ship ‘Eye of the Wind’. Since skippering his first charter boat in the early 90’s Mark has sailed over 100,000 sea miles, mainly amongst the Hebrides, but also further afield to the Faroes, Iceland and New Zealand. If quizzed he can’t even remember the exact number of times he has made it to St Kilda! A qualified diver, Mark is happy, whenever possible, to “hop over the side” and augment the ship’s supplies with fresh scallops!
Having lived and worked in the Hebrides for over 20 years, Mark is passionate about the need to protect and conserve this unique environment and its wildlife. Mark and his wife Anna White when not aboard Hjalmar Bjorge are keen travellers with a passion for exploring.
Michelle Baron (right) is responsible for the companies booking and administration. Michelle and husband Matthew, are old friends of the company. They spent many hours diving off our charter boats whilst onboard with their West Yorkshire dive club. A few years ago they moved to the Highlands and bought The Red House in Dornie. Within sight of Eilean Donan Castle, they offer quality holiday accommodation. When she can escape from her computer she’s usually to be found sailing, or running with her dogs Alfie and Bonnie.
Of course The Northern Light Cruising Company wouldn’t be the business it is without our brilliant crews who work so hard to provide our guests with an exceptional holiday experience. Read more about them here.
