Otter

Synopsis: a gentle end of season cruise combining sail and power where we take advantage of the natural shelter of the islands. An opportunity to explore less frequently visited southern Hebridean islands. Walks planned daily. Cetaceans, raptors, seabirds at sea, deer, otters and stunning sunsets.

Cetaceans, Sharks and Sunsets (Isles of the Sea) cruising areaDestination: guests join yacht Zuza around 1530 on Saturday 15 September at Oban Yachts, Kerrera. Our departure shortly thereafter will see us on anchor for our first evening meal aboard.

The itinerary is dependent on weather - balancing sailing with sheltered locations and reaching our preferred destinations. This cruise will be based on the latest sightings and will utilise our unique local knowledge to view cetaceans, basking sharks, raptors and seabirds plus it's a great time of year for beautiful sunsets and possibly even the Northern Lights. Likely destinations include the south coast of Mull (particularly for amazing raptor sites), Iona, the Garvellachs ("Isles of the Sea"), Colonsay, the raised beaches of Jura and the Gulf of Corryvreckan, etc. In recent years we have found the entrance to the Firth of Lorn to be an exciting "hot spot" for minke whales, dolphins and porpoise.

On the final day we head return to Oban, having brunch, before your departure on Friday 21 September.

Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: adders - basking shark - black guillemot - bottlenose dolphins - buzzard - common dolphins - cormorant - fulmars - gannets - golden eagle - great skuas - grey phalaropes - guillemots - kittiwakes - Leach's petrels - Manx shearwaters - minke whales - Northern Lights - otters - oystercatchers - porpoise - puffins - razorbills - Risso's dolphins - sea eagle - seals - storm petrels - sunfish - sunsets - swallow - terns - white-beaked dolphins - wild goats

Please Note: The above map indicates an area within which we are likely to travel. Weather and the interests and abilities of guests influence the skipper's final decision. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed.
