Synopsis: an adventurous and ambitious itinerary of northern offshore islands very much subject to weather and sea conditions. Climbing involved in some landings. Wildlife should be rewarding plus sites of interest on remote islands.
Our route during this cruise will, of course, very much depend on weather but we will aim to sail up the west side of Skye, to the Shiant Islands and then up the east coast of Lewis. If weather conditions are favourable we will make passage to the remote island of North Rona where we hope to anchor overnight. From here we sail (via Sula Sgeir) down the west coast of Lewis with possible stops at the Flannan Islands, Loch Roag, Scarp and Taransay. If the weather is obliging then possible highlights include the seabird colonies on the Shiant Islands and the gannetry on Sula Sgeir, puffins and more seabirds on the Flannans plus golden and sea eagles on Scarp. There should be dolphin and other cetacean sightings throughout; in recent years some of our better sightings have been in the north of the Hebrides, such as those involving orca (fingers crossed!) There are site of archaeological and historic interest on Canna, the Shiants, North Rona, the Flannans and Scarp. This trip comprises one of our more adventurous itineraries and guests must appreciate that all landings are weather and swell dependent. On the final day we head back into Oban for your departure after brunch or lunch on Sunday 17 June. Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: basking shark - black guillemot - bottlenose dolphins - buzzard - common dolphins - cormorant - fulmars - gannets - golden eagle - great northern diver - great skuas - guillemots - humpback whale (uncertain) - kittiwakes - Leach's petrels - Manx shearwaters - minke whales - orca - otters - oystercatchers - porpoise - puffins - razorbills - Risso's dolphins - sea eagle - seals - storm petrels - stunning sunsets - sunfish - terns - whale vertebrae found on beach - white-beaked dolphins Please Note: The above map indicates an area within which we are likely to travel. Weather and the interests and abilities of guests influence the skipper's final decision. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed. |
