Mingulay

Synopsis: a varied cruise combining sailing and power aiming for an interesting mix of Hebridean islands including - weather permitting - St Kilda. Visit a wide range of destinations and enjoy sailing with "the wind in your hair" plus daily walks, large numbers of birds and likelihood of cetaceans.

Outer Hebridean Explorer cruising areaDestination: guests join motor yacht Zuza at around 1530 on Wednesday 2 May at Oban Yachts, Kerrera. Our departure shortly thereafter will see us on anchor for our first evening meal aboard.

The itinerary is dependent on weather - balancing shelter with some exciting sailing - but may include, for example, some of the following destinations: Mull, the Small Isles (Rum, Canna, Eigg and Muck), Skye, Coll and Tiree in the Inner Hebrides. In the Outer Hebrides possibilities include the Shiants, Eriskay, Barra Head, Mingulay, Vatersay, Taransay, Scarp and the Monach Islands, etc. If weather permits we'll aim for St Kilda but this is by no means guaranteed. Expect sea and golden eagles, early cetaceans (such as dolphins, minke whales and basking sharks) and lots of seabirds such as gannets, puffins, guillemots, terns, skuas and razorbills with Soay sheep and the St Kilda wren at St Kilda.

On the final day we will return to Oban having brunch there before your departure on Friday 11 May.

Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: basking shark - black guillemot - bottlenose dolphins - buzzard - common dolphins - cormorant - fulmars - gannets - golden eagle - great northern diver - great skuas - guillemots - hairy caterpillar - humpback whale (uncertain) - kittiwakes - Leach's petrels - long-tailed skua - Manx shearwaters - minke whales - oystercatchers - peregrine - pomarine skua - porpoise - puffins - razorbills - red-throated divers - Risso's dolphins - sea eagle - seals - Soay sheep - St Kilda mouse - St Kilda wren - storm petrels - sunfish - terns - whale vertebrae found on beach - white-beaked dolphins

Please Note: The above map indicates an area within which we are likely to travel. Weather and the interests and abilities of guests influence the skipper's final decision. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed.

"I know it is a

cliché, but “going

to where you’re

“getting to where

summarizes the

experience."
