Leaving St Kilda as the sun is setting

Synopsis: an adventurous, yet relaxing, cruise amongst the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides including St Kilda (weather permitting). Visit a wide range of island destinations with, hopefully, rewarding encounters with wildlife of all sorts, feathered and finned. Gentle cruising taking advantage of the natural shelter of the islands. Walks planned every day. Great time of year for cetaceans (see below). Very small possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

Destination: guests arrive at Oban for around 1600 with vessel Hjalmar Bjorge departing in the late afternoon of Sunday 17 August for a leisurely cruise up the Sound of Mull to Loch Sunart. On our outward journey we pass the Small Isles and land at Lochmaddy where our second night is spent. The next day will see a walk on the island of Scarp and we anchor in Loch Resort on Harris. From here, if the weather is favourable, we will head to St Kilda where we'll spend a couple of nights giving you plenty of time to explore Hirta during the days.

After a sail round the other islands and stacks we will enjoy a walk on Taransay before cruising down the East side of the Uists to Lochboisdale or, if weather permits, an overnight stay at Eriskay. From here it's a short journey to Canna where you can take an all day walk as our eighth night is spent here. Next day we sail past Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, down the Sound of Mull and into Loch Linnhe for an overnight stay between Bernera Island and Lismore. Our final day involves a cruise into Oban for your departure after lunch on Monday 25 August.

Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: basking shark, bottle-nosed dolphins, common dolphins, corncrake, eagle, fulmars, gannets, great skuas, grey phalaropes, guillemots, kittiwakes, Leach's petrels, minke whales, orca, porpoise, Soay sheep, St Kilda mouse, St Kilda wren, storm petrels, sunfish

Please Note: The journey described above is typical of this cruise but is not guaranteed. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed.

"Size of boat a real plus - the intimacy and the seas relative to the boat. It may not have been that rough but it was very exciting in some of the seas!"
