Sunset in Loch Sunart

Synopsis: a gentle cruise in local waters taking advantage of the natural shelter of the Hebrides. Enjoy the last of summer and stunning scenery of early autumn. Walks planned every day. Great time of year for cetaceans (see below). Very small possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

Destination: guests arrive at Oban for around 1600 with vessel Hjalmar Bjorge departing in the late afternoon of Saturday 13 September for a leisurely cruise up the Sound of Mull into Lochs Sunart and Drumbuie. After our first night in this quiet anchorage we visit the waters round the small isles of Muck, Rum, Eigg and Canna with shore visits and a whole day ashore at Canna. This beautiful island almost always delivers golden and sea eagles. If the weather is fine then we'll head to Gunna Sound (a hotspot for whales and dolphin) before travelling to the Treshnish Isles, perhaps Staffa and a night at Gometra off the West Coast of Mull. Our final night be probably be spent in Loch Spelve on the South coast of Mull, another hot spot for sea and golden eagles plus otters.

Please note the route remains deliberately flexible as we are aiming to provide you with a relaxed "wind down" cruise so will change our plans if it looks like the sea might get choppy. The final day will see our arrival back in Oban for your departure after lunch on Wednesday 17 September.

Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: adders, basking shark, common dolphins, gannets, golden eagles, minke whales, Northern Lights, otters, sea eagles, sunsets, swallow, wild goats, wren

Please Note: The journey described above is typical of this cruise but is not guaranteed. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed.
