Synopsis: a gentle early season cruise taking advantage of the natural shelter of the islands. April is frequently crisp and bright with no midges this early on. Walks planned daily. Birds and perhaps early cetaceans (see list below).

Destination: guests arrive at Oban for around 1600 with vessel Hjalmar Bjorge departing in the late afternoon of Thursday 10 April for a cruise up the Sound of Mull into Loch Sunart. After our first night in this quiet anchorage we visit the waters round the small isles of Muck, Rum, Eigg and Canna with the whole of the second day spent at Canna, island of sea eagles.

Next we cruise the seas of Gunna Sound, a hotspot for whales and dolphin before heading for the Treshnish Isles and Staffa. Lunga the largest of the Treshnish Isles is known as "puffin island." At Staffa you'll see Fingal's Cave made famous by the composer Mendelssohn. Our final night be probably be spent in Loch Spelve on the South coast of Mull, another hot spot for sea and golden eagles.

This itinerary is flexible; if weather is great we may travel further afield, if weather is not so good then we may visit other sheltered waters. On the final day we head into Oban for your departure after lunch on Monday 14 April.

Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: antlers, bluebells, bridled guillemot, fossils, fulmars, gannets, golden eagles, great skuas, guillemots, harbour porpoise, herons, Manx shearwaters, otters, puffins, ravens, razorbills, red deer, sea eagles, seals, shags

Please Note: The journey described above is typical of this cruise but is not guaranteed. Sightings and findings are examples from previous similar cruises; the list is neither exhaustive nor guaranteed.
